There is no best adaptogen for dogs. The word covers several herbs sold for stress, and the canine evidence does not support a ranking.

Ashwagandha is the only one in this group with a placebo-controlled dog trial, and that trial tested one named extract. Rhodiola is listed on some calming products, but this review has no canine clinical trial of rhodiola for anxiety, sleep or stress. A human study, or a blend that also contains L-theanine, does not establish either herb.

Ashwagandha is one extract, not a class

A 2022 randomized double-blind trial enrolled 24 client-owned dogs with stress or anxiety signs, 12 per group, for four weeks. The tested product was KSM-66, a standardized ashwagandha root extract, at 15 mg/kg once daily. Fear and anxiety scores and the urinary cortisol-to-creatinine ratio improved versus placebo. The details and limits are on the ashwagandha evidence page.

That is not a general calming claim. Another root powder, a lower dose, or a chew that lists ashwagandha beside several herbs is a different product. One 24-dog study is not enough to call ashwagandha the best adaptogen.

Rhodiola has no dog trial here

Rhodiola rosea is marketed as an adaptogen for fatigue and stress in people. This site’s calming review did not find a controlled canine trial of rhodiola for behavior, noise fear or sleep. Until that exists, a label line that says rhodiola is not evidence the chew was studied in dogs.

If a product combines rhodiola with L-theanine, tryptophan or melatonin, any effect would belong to the studied ingredient, not to rhodiola. Those ingredients have their own pages: L-theanine, tryptophan and melatonin.

What to use instead of a best list

For sleep and situational stress, start with the ingredient that has a dog page and a named dose, not with an adaptogen blend. Melatonin evidence is thin and mostly situational. L-theanine evidence is formula-specific. Neither is an adaptogen, and neither should be used to prop up a rhodiola claim.

Compare the actual listed ingredients in the dog calming supplement listings. Stop a new herb chew if the dog vomits, becomes sedated, or has diarrhea, and ask a veterinarian before combining it with behavioral medication.

A study amount is a research reference, not a recommended dose. Matching it does not mean a product will produce the same outcome.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best adaptogens for dogs?

None has a basis for a best ranking. Ashwagandha has one small placebo-controlled dog trial of a named root extract. Rhodiola has no canine clinical trial in this review. L-theanine and melatonin have their own, still limited, dog evidence and are not adaptogens.

Is rhodiola safe and effective for dogs?

Effectiveness is not established. This review found no canine clinical trial of rhodiola for stress or anxiety. A human-herb claim does not transfer to dogs, and a calming chew that lists rhodiola usually contains other ingredients.

Is ashwagandha the best calming herb for dogs?

No. One 24-dog trial of KSM-66 ashwagandha root extract reported lower fear and anxiety scores than placebo. That does not cover other extracts, doses or multi-herb blends.
