Cosequin vs Dasuquin: what each label gives your dog per day
For a 20 kg (44 lb) dog at the maintenance amount, Cosequin chewable tablets give 600 mg glucosamine HCl, 300 mg chondroitin sulfate and 250 mg MSM a day; Dasuquin with MSM gives 600 mg, 250 mg and 400 mg, plus ASU, boswellia, green tea extract and 50 mg EPA+DHA. At this weight the glucosamine amount is the same; the difference is Dasuquin's added ingredients, and the evidence for each of them is summarized below.
Daily amount by dog weight (maintenance)
Amounts are the label's mg per tablet or chew multiplied by the label's maintenance servings for that weight. Loading amounts in the first weeks are higher.

Dasuquin also lists green tea extract (16 mg per small/medium chew, 32 mg per large chew). Cosequin also lists manganese (3 mg per tablet). The 60-count Cosequin chew tabs have the same label amounts as the 132-count tablets.
Glucosamine compared with the study dose
The reference trial, Kampa et al., 2023 (6 weeks, dogs with hip osteoarthritis), gave 30 mg glucosamine HCl per kg per day. At the maintenance amount:
- 10 kg dog: Cosequin 100% of the study dose; Dasuquin 100%.
- 20 kg dog: Cosequin 100% of the study dose; Dasuquin 100%.
- 30 kg dog: Cosequin 67% of the study dose; Dasuquin 100%.
- 40 kg dog: Cosequin 50% of the study dose; Dasuquin 75%.
In this placebo-controlled trial the glucosamine group did not improve on the objective force-plate measure. The product tested also contained chondroitin, MSM and avocado/soybean unsaponifiables, so the result applies to that combination, not to glucosamine alone.
Matching a study dose does not mean the product will produce the same outcome.
What the evidence shows for each ingredient
Ratings describe canine research on the ingredient, not tests of either product. See what our ratings mean.
- Glucosamine HCl: Mixed (our review)
- Chondroitin sulfate: Insufficient (our review)
- MSM: Insufficient (our review)
- ASU: Insufficient (our review)
- Boswellia extract: Mixed (our review)
- EPA+DHA: Supportive (our review)
The omega-3 rating comes from trials of fish-oil-enriched diets and fish oil supplements. We have not yet signed off a reference EPA+DHA dose, so we do not compare Dasuquin's EPA+DHA with those studies. ASU in dogs has only been tested inside combination products, which is why it is rated Insufficient.
