Colostrum for Dogs With Allergies: Does It Help Itchy Skin?

Bovine colostrum — the first milk a cow produces after calving — is a common ingredient in dog “allergy and immune” chews, usually alongside fish oil, probiotics or quercetin. We found no controlled trial of colostrum for itching or allergic skin disease in dogs. What dog studies do show is narrower: changes in immune markers and vaccine response in adult dogs fed colostrum for months, and better stool scores in stressed puppies.

What is colostrum?

Colostrum is the thick, early milk produced in the first days after birth. Bovine colostrum is rich in antibodies (immunoglobulins, especially IgG), lactoferrin, growth factors and small peptides sometimes marketed as “proline-rich polypeptides”. For a newborn puppy, its own mother’s colostrum is vital: the gut absorbs intact antibodies only in the first hours of life. For an adult dog eating bovine colostrum, the proteins are mostly digested, and any effects are thought to act through the gut and its immune tissue rather than by transferring antibodies into the blood.

What dog studies show

Immune markers in adult dogs

In a study by Nestlé Purina researchers, adult huskies were fed a diet with or without bovine colostrum for 40 weeks. Dogs given colostrum had higher antibody levels after canine distemper vaccination, higher fecal IgA (a marker of gut immune activity) and greater gut bacterial diversity. These are immune measurements, not clinical outcomes: the study did not look at skin, itch or allergies, and a 2025 review of colostrum and canine immune health by the same research group focused on vaccination and immune aging.

Stool quality in stressed puppies

In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in Japan, 70 puppies aged 40–50 days, mostly toy breeds, received 0.5 g of bovine colostrum powder or 0.5 g of skim-milk powder daily for 10 days after the stress of transport. Stool quality improved in both groups, but the colostrum group had significantly better stool scores from day 6 to day 9. This supports a gut effect in a specific high-risk situation.

Allergic skin disease: no canine trials

We did not find any controlled study of colostrum for itching or atopic dermatitis in dogs. The anti-allergy story comes from:

• Rodent studies, such as a recent mouse model in which early-life bovine colostrum reduced atopic-dermatitis-like skin inflammation;
• Laboratory work on colostrum components that dampen inflammatory signals;
• Human studies of colostrum or its peptides in allergy.

These make a biological case worth testing, but they do not show that a chew with colostrum reduces a dog’s itching.

Safety: colostrum is a dairy protein

Bovine colostrum is concentrated cow’s-milk protein. In a review of food-allergy studies in dogs, beef and dairy products were among the most frequently reported allergen sources. For a dog with a food allergy — itself a common cause of itching — a colostrum chew could make things worse. If your dog is on an elimination diet, avoid colostrum products entirely. Otherwise, colostrum is generally well tolerated in dog studies, though any new protein can cause loose stool.

How to read the label

• How much colostrum per chew, in mg? The puppy trial used 0.5 g (500 mg) a day for small puppies. Many chews list colostrum in a proprietary blend.

When to see a veterinarian

Itching that lasts more than a week or two, recurring ear infections, paw licking, hair loss, or red, crusty or smelly skin need a diagnosis. Allergies, parasites and infections all have effective, well-studied treatments.
